Theatre Workshop Community Play
January 24, 2006
Open Public Meeting Monday February 6 at 7.00pm
With or without previous experience, Theatre Workshop would like to invite you to come along and take part in this years Community Play 06.
This year, Theatre Workshop presents – a reworking of ‘Oh, What A Lovely War’ in reaction and response to the current war and conflict in Iraq.
Theatre Workshop will highlight the injustices, the power play, the moral and social dilemmas, the lies, the corruption and how we can make comparisons with almost 100 years ago .
We will also examine how the public is lead to believe the justification given to them by governments for war, and how the true cost is hidden, Emotional, Personal and Financial.
If you share the same beliefs and want to have fun participating in making this production as successful and renowned as past productions, such as The Threepenny Opera, and Black Sun Over Genoa, then come along to our first public meeting on Monday February the 6th 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
Whether it is acting, singing, dancing, technical, costume, design, playing an instrument or helping with research, we would like you to get involved. You do not need to have any experience in any of the areas of theatre production as there will be workshops and a chance to work alongside some of Scotland’s finest theatre practitioners. You will learn skills that you can take away and benefit from outside of the theatre, and have the experience of meeting like-minded people.
For those interested in research and/or writing, there will be an initial meeting on Thursday 26 January 2006 at 7.00pm at Theatre Workshop.
For any further information please contact:
Theatre Workshop on 0131 225 7942 to confirm your attendance.

Broughton Youth Theatre – Double Bill
November 9, 2005The BYT production this autumn will be a double bill of short plays, Taking Breath and The Exam.
A fresh Drama experience with scripts written by living and breathing writers. The main characters are teenagers.
Taking Breath is a play about protesting – 5 teenagers spend a night on a tree platform to prevent a new motorway being built and the trees and old houses being destroyed in the process. After one of teenagers has an accident and is left unconscious, he encounters a servant girl from 1913 who worked in one of the threatened houses. The story weaves backwards and forwards in time, connecting with the suffragette movement when women fought for the right to vote. The story explores themes of cowardice and bravery.
The Exam is a fast paced comedy set in the minutes and hours before, during and after (guess what…), an exam. Three students face the final hurdle in their school careers when they face the invigilator and the rules of the exam hall. The play explores the way that the differences between people makes us judge others and make assumptions about them as well as about ourselves. The three characters learn to understand more about each other and about life. Themes include loss, poor parenting and the overwhelming burdens of the British Exam system.
I hope you can come to see these excellent plays and support the students who have prepared such superb performances. Special acknowledgement goes to Rebecca Crowther (S6), who has worked as a Director on the production since last August, and sadly, will be leaving us before the performances to embark on her year out in Italy before returning to pursue a career in Drama.
Broughton Youth Theatre is open to anyone aged between 14 and 21 who is interested in learning more about all aspects of theatre including Acting, Playwriting, Theatre Arts, Directing, and Stage Management.
In January 2006, there will be an opportunity for new members to join and for existing members to build up skills ready for the next production.
